A nice gift for Xmas from Zuni and Hummel

UPDATE 11.27.02
Right now, it seems that when Hummel sets foot in the pen, they all smell her and now see her, then like little
drones, crawl towards her. Then the struggle begins. Its probably good that the litter is this large, as if it were 5
only, there would be no competition since there are 10 nipples, and they now learn that they have to be strong and
not give up to eat. This makes them all pretty competitive it seems. It's hard to have ten growing pups on her at
once. they are just getting to large to be all on her at the same time.

Their noses are forming now indeed, and all ears are flopped over. All eyes open and some are really making the
effort to walk! Just like babies. I even noticed that they remove themselves (usually) from the litter when they
have to relieve themselves. Unless Hummel beats them to it. That's really amazing! The first steps of
housebreaking.
Zoltan climbed on top on Hummel yesterday while she was nursing the rest, and if he would have known, he could
have climbed out of the whelping pen. I watch him and he fortunately slid down Hummel's belly and landed amidst
his siblings ;-) who knows where he was going?...
11.21.02 Aha, I noticed a change tonight in almost all of them. One of their ears is not flat against their heads any longer! Its now bending away from their heads! I wonder if both ears are floppy tomorrow ;-)
Their eyes and ears are supposed to open around the 10th to the 12th day. I'll keep my eyes and ears open for any progress. All of them have gained about 1/2 a pound in weight in 8 days.
11.14.02 I'm PLEASED to announce that we have TEN one day old pups. Five males, Five females.
I tell ya, when Zuni does something, he does it right! ;-) So, everyone who wanted a male HAS ONE!!!
This birthing saga started yesterday when FINALLY after much contractions Hummel got up and stormed OUT of
her whelping pen, whereupon I hollered ' O MY GOD!!!' and, ran like hell behind her arching back and caught the
first male in 'mid air'. Weighing in at 1.5 lbs ;-) She went into FULL mommy mode instantly though and she's a
GREAT mom! just like her mom V Witta Wildsteiger Land. I've been hoping for Zuni babies for soooo long, that
you can imagine the tears appeared in my eyes while witnessing this little miracle come into the world.
his collar code is WHITE
(Zuni)
13 days old
The next pup, a female, delivered at 2;45pm weighed in at 1.25lbs and is collar coded PINK. (Zsa-Zsa)
Ms. Zsa Zsa now weighs 2lbs, as much as all the boys! 11/22/02

Then, the third impatient one, a male announced himself at 3:08 fast behind the female and weighed in at 1.25 lbs
and is collar coded Wide Rainbow Dark colors.
(Zuess)

Then, I ran into some concern. It was 2 hours now after nr 3 was born and I knew to take action. I called the vet
and took Hummel and her 3 pups to them and we gave Hummel a contraction stimulant to induce further labor.
But first the Vet says, we should take an Xray and see how many are left... I go as long as it doesnt hurt her, ok.
He comes out of the room with the Xray counting saying, I count another 7 in there!!!
I nearly FAINTED. I said "you are playing with me, right?" SEVEN, another SEVEN?????? NO WAY....!
He goes "sure I'll show you...." oh man...
Hummel came from a litter of 6, and Zuni from a litter of 7 so I figured we'll have 6, or 7. So much for my math...
Anyway, the Oxitocyn worked and soon there came nr. four, a
female, weighed in at 1.1 lbs and is now collar coded narrow
ORANGE.
(Zanta)
born
about 5;45pm
On to Nr FIVE; A female, weighed in at 1 lb and her collar code is BLUE
(Zoe)
born
about 6;45pm

Numero Six, a large male, was delivered at 7 pm and weighed in at 1.5 lbs
.. He is collar coded
wide Orange (Zycco)
Z
Then , Nr SEVEN, a female and the last one to be born at the vet, weighed in at 1.1 lbs and is collar coded
YELLOW.
(Ztsarina)

the only way I knew this was
Ztsarina is that a little bit of yellow ribbon stuck out ;-) She was not
about to get pushed out of her position while the others pushed on underneath
her!!!
Mind you, in between all this from 5:45 thru 8 pm there were serious caps in that I almost decided to do a
C-section. However, Hummel saved the day by delivering Ztsarina around 8:05pm and I said, I'm taking my chances
and hope the Oxitocyn continues to work.. And WORK IT DID...
Pup NR EIGHT was born IN THE CAR !!! w
While we drove home from the vet at 8:20pm !!!! All went well, ;-) This
is Zoltan, and he weighed in at 1.25 lbs ;-)
he's probably going to be a racecar driver...
[ck out the link at left as to how indeed
Wolfi turned out?] He
should be called "Explorer" since he was born in one ...
hey, what breeder can say that about one of their pups eh eh eh .....
He is collar coded GREEN Zoltan
Then, Nr NINE, a female arrived at 8:40pm and weighed in at 1 lb. She is adorable and is collar coded
RAINBOW
LITE COLORS ;-) narrow band
(Zaoa)

Then Nr Ten, a male weighed in at 1. 1/8 lbs and is collar coded
RED.
(Zamb) born
10.26pm.

born
about 10.26 pm. .. Who says
the last ones are runts?
day 10
The "Z" Litter Vom Kerschberger Pups
the names below are only for registration purposes
You, the owner(s), can do what I did with Zuni, who's registered name is "Nolte" due to his litter being the "N" litter of the Wienerau kennel in Germany
Names males: Zuni, Zamb, Zoltan, Zycco, Zuess
Names Females: Zsa-Zsa, Zoe, Zaoa, Ztsarina, Zanta
ok, a little post note to the names. I had chosen TEN names prior to the birth NOT knowing there were going to be ten, and especially not knowing it was going to be a perfect 5 males, 5 females... who'd have guessed...
On top of that: I ended up naming pups at random and putting the ribbons on as they were born. The naming was done on like day 3 or 4. Then, I, by pure co-incidence, end up keeping the two with the rainbow colors Zeuss and Zaoa. Rainbow being the favorite song of my deceased dad. The parent I inherited my love for animals from...

Ginger and Zuni in the 'waiting room' hoping to get their courtyard back soon... which they did finally...

All pups went to terrific homes and only 2 went quite far, Farmington NM and El Paso TX. Two pups I kept, Zaoa and Zeuss pictured above, which I could have sold easily too, but I felt the need to keep 2 from the first litter. Zuess scored so high on his pup test I had to keep him too!!!
We did Pup Testing on Jan 5th which revealed which pups were of working quality (high drives and fokus) and which were of great family pet quality. 6 pups out of Ten is a high nr for workability. Once the pups turn about 10 months in Mid September we'll know how many are of good breeding quality.
Zuess has extreme concentration towards me and is going to be very trainable. Zaoa is an outdoor dog, who likes to do her own exploration. She is extremely independent and has no fear for going into strange structures. She'd make a great Search and Rescue dog. She carries around anything, plastic, rubber, rocks, wood etc. They both are already trying to run the ramp in the workout field. Give m another week... They both sat and downed in 2 or 3 minutes. They both retrieve. The pups have inherited their extreme intelligence of their lineage, that's obvious.
Zsa Zsa, the female named for Ms. Gabor, turned out to be like her name sake. ALPHA to the max, and she was the FIRST to retrieve the ball, return it at 5 1/2 weeks and was consistent with it until she left to go to her new home where she will run the show soon, i'm sure.... Can't wait to see this one as an adult. She has extreme confidence....
We recently had a pup play date and it was fun to see Zamb, Zoltan, Zoe and Zstarina play with Zeuss and Zaoa again. We are having another one Saturday the 15th and I hope to see 2 more. Zsa Zsa and Zycco should be there that day too.
Ciao! Gina
